About The National Boys Choir of Australia

Group of young boys singing at National Boys Choir concert.

Our Legacy and Excellence

Founded in 1964, the National Boys Choir of Australia has become one of the nation's premier treble choirs. Comprising approximately 150 boys aged 7 to 15, the choir offers a rigorous two-year training program before members join the Performing Choir.

Choristers are trained in a traditional  classical style, performing a diverse repertoire that spans early motets, contemporary commissioned works, fully staged children’s operas, musical comedy, art songs, and folk songs from around the globe.

What types of music does the choir perform and how often?

  • Repertoire: The choir’s repertoire is diverse, covering early motets, contemporary commissioned works, fully staged children’s operas, musical comedy, art songs, and folk songs from around the world. The choir performs regularly throughout the year at major concerts, events and while on tour.

  • Age Range: Boys aged 7 to 8 are eligible to join the choir.
  • Joining Process: Interested candidates must go through an audition process held annually. During the audition, boys are assessed on their musical ability and potential. Detailed information about the audition requirements, dates, and preparation tips can be found on our website here. Parents can register their details and request more information via the submission form on our Audition page.

  • Training: Choristers undergo comprehensive training in the traditional classical style. This includes vocal technique, music theory, sight-reading, and performance skills. The training program spans two years before boys join the Performing Choir.
  • Time Commitment: Members are expected to attend weekly rehearsals and additional sectional rehearsals as required. They also participate in numerous performances, concerts, and special events throughout the year. The exact schedule varies, and detailed information is provided upon acceptance into the choir.
