Young Men’s Choir Japan Tour  |  18 – 25 January, 2024

In January, sixteen members of the Young Men’s Choir travelled to Japan performing in Osaka, Kyoto, Toyota City and Tokyo.

Osaka and the City of Melbourne share a 45year sister city relationship, and a performance at Abeno Harukas, one of the tallest buildings in Japan, was a breathtaking way to begin their concert tour.  Concerts in Kyoto and Tokyo had a Pop Star feel as the boys signed autographs after their performances.

Catching up with the Toyota Boys and Girls Choir in Toyota city was special for all concerned, a 20 year relationship between the two choirs was rekindled, with song, laughter and refreshments.

One of the highlights of the tour was an invitation to perform at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo.   Welcomed by Ambassador Hayhurst, the boys performed for a select group of guests followed by a short reception.

Of course, no visit to Japan would be complete without a little sightseeing – during their time the YMC managed to visit Kiyomizu, Kinkakuji Temple, Asakusa Kannon Temple, Meiji Shrine, a little shopping and finally a quick trip to Disneyland before heading back to Australia.

The Choir was accompanied by Artistic Director, Mr Andrew Bainbridge and former tutor/accompanist, Mrs Ruth Tenace. Guest accompanist, Reuben Johnson also travelled with the young men.

The National Boys Choir of Australia acknowledges the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, the traditional custodians of the land on which we rehearse and work. We pay respect to their elders past, present and emerging.
