“This is my sixth year in the choir,” said fourteen-year-old Michael.
“I’ve enjoyed my time here. I’ll be sad to leave and will really miss it. The staff have supported me and given me a lot of opportunities and I’d like to thank them,” he added.
Michael’s voice has changed, so it’s time to move on.
“I remember when Mr Casey, the Artistic Director at the time, came to school and I auditioned.”
Michael thought he’d enjoy being in the choir and he wasn’t wrong.
“I loved the performing opportunities, the new songs, and the friends I made.
“I learned a lot of music, theory and how to sing, I also learned about leadership and was thrilled to be appointed Prefect and Captain.
“When we were on tour in Queensland in September, I learned how to lead by example.”
When asked if he ever got nervous singing in front of an audience he replied: “I did at first. The first couple of performances I was really nervous. I didn’t know what to expect, but I soon learned how to get my nerves under control mainly by breathing.
“Recently, at a clarinet concert and a piano recital I was able to control my nerves using techniques I learned at the choir.’
So, what’s Michael going to do with all the spare time he has on his hands now he’s not attending rehearsals and performances on a regular basis?
“I’ve been thinking of continuing piano; I’ve already passed Grade Eight…or I might start a volleyball club!”
