The NBCA Sings The Song Of Resilience During COVID-19
The fact that the National Boys Choir of Australia was founded 56 years ago says a lot about its resilience and relevance. In 2020, the NBCA has faced its biggest challenge to date – the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, the NBCA has found a way to continue its education offering and is keeping choristers across all choirs engaged during a challenging academic year. It’s all about the online learning space: virtual ‘rehearsal rooms’ are the NBCA’s temporary new normal.

Austin Haynes Pursues His Love Of Literature At Oxford University
Melbourne is the UNESCO City of Literature as well as home to NBCA Old Boy Austin Haynes. With a thirst for English and continuing curiosity for music, Austin has packed his bags and headed to one of the world’s most literature-rich cities to study in the UK. Austin joined the NBCA in 2008 and became Co-Captain in 2014 while enjoying many performances in between.

THE NBCA Thanks Mr Rex Wenn and Appoints its New President
In early August, Mr Rex Wenn announced his retirement as President. Rex has been associated with the Choir for at least 38 years. His three sons sang in the Choir, (Cameron was Choir Captain in 1986), and Rex was President for 17 years. We thank Rex for his outstanding contribution to the NBCA over such a long period and wish him well in his retirement.

After 25 years as Senior Accompanist, Miss Robyn Cochrane decided in July to leave the Choir. She will be missed by staff, boys – old and young – and audiences.

Old Boy Hamish Blake recently appeared in the ABC iview series ‘If Only I Knew: Your Mental Health Monologues’. The series is an insightful one, and Hamish talks to his younger self along the theme of ‘what do you know now that you wish you knew earlier in life’.

Retired Choristers Re-Connect in the new Young Men's Choir
Voice-change for many choristers can be devastating. To accommodate retired choristers who aren’t ready to stop singing, the NBCA decided to start a Young Men’s Choir this year. When Jasper was approached by Mr Bainbridge to join, his response was: “Let’s do it! I was really happy to join a smaller group and I feel very connected to these boys.

2020 Christmas Concert
Restrictions surrounding COVID-19 have seriously affected the Choir’s rehearsal schedule, and the boys have not rehearsed together since June except via Zoom. With restrictions still in place, and no indication yet of when live rehearsals can recommence, we regret to announce that the NBCA’s annual Christmas Concert, scheduled for Sunday 20 December, has been cancelled. We look forward to welcoming you to our concerts in 2021.

The NBCA Studios Get A Spruce Up
Over the Term 2 school holidays, the NBCA studios received a spruce-up. The Casey and Bird studios, as well as the reception/family waiting area, now have fabulous new cupboards and benches featuring classic NBCA blue doors and gold-coloured handles.
